Why you should have a Michigan State ID for Children
All Michigan parents should get a Michigan State ID as it serves as a legal identification card. In emergencies, you can present this document to the police. Additionally, the enhanced Michigan State ID for children is an ID the Federal govt. approves to allow your child to re-enter the United States when traveling by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean without showing other identity or passports at the border. The enhanced Michigan ID is optional federal law only requires it once the child reaches 16. However, the standard or enhanced Michigan State ID is available for any child or infant upon the parent or guardian’s request.
How to apply for a standard Michigan State ID Card for your child:
- Provide proof of the child’s valid Social Security number. The state will verify all Social Security information.
- Provide proof of identity, U.S. citizenship or legal presence, and residency for the child. (Residency can be confirmed through documents in the parent’s name or other forms of proof establish the family relationship.)
- Sign the application on behalf of an infant or child who cannot do so.
- Have a photograph for your child.
- Pay the standard state ID card fee if not exempt.
If your child is under 21, “Under 21” will be printed above their photo.
Enhanced Michigan State ID Child Card Requirements:
Documents needed for Michigan State ID
- The child must be a U.S. citizen and a Michigan resident
- The child must have a valid Social Security card. The state will verify Social Security information.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship (for example, a governmental unit in the U.S. or U.S territory must issue a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate with a raised seal)
- Identity (a current Michigan photo ID card or school ID. If your child does not have an acceptable photo ID, a parent or guardian can present your driver’s license or ID and sign for your child.)
- Residency (a current Michigan photo ID card) If you establish the family relationship through other proof, you can confirm residency through documents in the parent’s name.
- Parents or legal guardians must sign the application on behalf of an infant or child.
You need to pay the enhanced Michigan State ID card fee, and if approved, the card will be valid for four years. If you do not receive approval for same-day documents, you may need to make a second visit. Your child’s enhanced Michigan state ID card will be valid for four years.
