What is the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility (MAIPF)?

The Essential Insurance Act of 1979 changed the placement facility from an assigned risk plan to a joint underwriting association (JUA) effective January 1, 1981. A JUA is a pooling mechanism under which a limited number of Michigan automobile insurance companies act as servicing carriers. Michigan auto insurance companies pay JUA administrative and operating costs proportionately to their market share.

Four Insurance Companies serve as (MAIPF) servicing carriers: three for private passenger business and one for commercial. The three private passenger carriers are Auto Club Insurance Association, Auto-Owners Insurance Company, and State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Company. The commercial carrier is Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company.
