What is the Michigan Automobile Insurance Placement Facility (MAIPF)?
Effective January 1, 1981, the Essential Insurance Act of 1979 change the placement facility from an assigned risk plan to a joint underwriting association (JUA). A JUA is a pooling mechanism under which a limited number of Michigan automobile insurance companies act as servicing carriers. Michigan auto insurance companies pay JUA administrative and operating costs in proportion to their market share.
Four Insurance Companies serve as (MAIPF) servicing carriers, Three for private passenger business, and one for commercial. The three private passenger carriers are Auto Club Insurance Association, Auto-Owners Insurance Company, and State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Company. The commercial carrier is the Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company.
