Michigan Driver Responsibility Fees
Governor Snyder signed a bill March 31, 2018, eliminating driver responsibility fees for individuals who entered a payment plan before February 1, 2018. If you did not start a payment plan before February 1, 2018, you are still responsible for payments until October 1, 2018. At that time all Driver Responsibility Fees from the Driver Responsibility Fees charge will be over.
Individuals can choose to participate in a qualifying program instead of making the payments for their Driver Responsibility fees before October 1, 2018. Michigan Department of Treasury and the Michigan Secretary of State are partnering with local workforce development agencies such as Michigan Works. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), City of Detroit and other local government workforce development programs to identify and enroll participants in qualifying programs to assist in the elimination of driver responsibility fees that are due before October 1, 2018. Individuals have to participate in a qualifying program consisting of at least 10 hours of participation to meet the requirement for the Workforce Development Program.
Michigan Driver Responsibility Workforce Eligibility
Michigan Department of Treasury will contact existing participants in programs that meet the State of Michigan’s requirements. They will provide opportunities for individuals to enroll and participate in programs that will qualify them to eliminate their Driver Responsibility Fees. Everyone who did not enroll in an installment plan before February 1, 2018, is eligible to participate in this program.
How to waive the Michigan Driver Responsibility:
- Individuals will need to work with local workforce development agencies to enter into a qualifying program and complete the Workforce Development Program Verification, Driver Responsibility Fee Waiver (Form 5586).
- The local workforce development agency will verify and approve the form.
- Send Forms to the Michigan Department of Treasury, Office of Collections, PO Box 30149, Lansing, MI 48909.
Individuals already participating in a qualifying program will have their driver responsibility debt eliminated and will be notified by mail from the Michigan Department of Treasury in April 2018.
Driver Responsibility Fees Paid
Once your driver responsibility fees have been eliminated, you will be contacted by Michigan Department of Treasury and may qualify to get your license back. Reinstatement fees will not be charged between March 31, 2018, and December 31, 2018. At that time they will waive the balance.
